WEATHERING WAVES: EVOKING THE RAMAYANA

Priyantha Udagedara

Priyantha Udagedara’s works are speculative, thought-provoking, beautiful, and political as much as they are nostalgic. His philosophy towards painting is defined by a unique preoccupation with the forces of beauty and terror and their intersections. As an accomplished contemporary artist from Sri Lanka, Udegedara has honed his craft for more than two decades. His skill and precision are imbued into each work within this exhibition, as one is helplessly drawn to their arresting compositions and intricate details. His forthcoming exhibition 'Weathering Waves' opens on 24th August at Exhibit 320, New Delhi and will run until 23rd September 2024. This will be Udagedara's first solo exhibition in New Delhi, India.

With a unique and nostalgic perspective on Sri Lanka and its beauty, Udegedara turns to The Ramayana as a foundational source of inspiration in the works displayed in this exhibition. It is a journey that amalgamates the mythical, the spiritual, the natural, the romantic, and the existential. This exhibit is a reminder of the haunting presence and relevance of the epic even in 2024. Each piece is constructed using a craft of collaging that Priyantha has honed for over a decade, using newspaper and magazine cuttings and research about flora and fauna that are endemic to Sri Lanka and its immediate environment.

Udegadara has showcased his work in art spaces across the globe including at the Colombo Art Biennale, Art Dubai and India Art Fair. He has also exhibited at the Grosvenor's Gallery in the UK, as well as Aicon Contemporary and Baik Art Gallery in New York. His splendid works have been featured in ARTRA Magazine's Subverted Flowers Edition 61, alongside contemporary names such as Anoli Perera, Nuwan Nalaka, Anusha Gajaweera, Sanjeewa Kumara and more. This edition explores the infinite symbolic potential of flowers within contemporary art, delving into the multidimensional facets they may represent from clarity and culture to chaos and consumption.
