To sustain, in music, means the measurement of time for a single note to sound out. It is a parameter of a note that denotes its period of sound until it is non-existent. As a general concept, sustainability, in this progressing world carries a similar meaning, for which it denotes the ability to exist continually. Today, the environment demands the two concepts to align so as to produce a movement that provides the capacity for music to exist sustainably. The ideologies that exist today are those that cater to creating and producing sustainable music equipment so it is used responsibly in a manner that contributes to sustaining the biodiversity as well as the culture of music. In fact, Yamaha Music is a beacon that strives to achieve and initiate this cause actively by means of following strict policies implemented that serve these impending concerns. The sciences that exist with creating a musical instrument, be it a family of strings, wind or percussion, requires and demands highly significant and valuable materials such as wood from priceless species of trees and it has come as a cost to the environment. Every year nearly 2.5 million new acoustic and electric guitars are sold in a single country, consuming a considerable mass of wood, in turn reducing the lifespan of invaluable species causing a significant carbon footprint from the harvesting, shipping, and production of wood used to make new instruments every year. In response and insistence to preserve the culture of music, Yamaha’s nod to the fact that forests and ecosystems are valuable shared social assets that should be passed on to future generations, and the responsibility of everyone living today to use these assets in a sustainable manner allows them to procure all timber used in its products based on their policies now and in future, in order to contribute to the creation of a more harmonious relationship between society and nature.

Yamaha’s dogmata and strategies have made significant leeway and progress to produce sustainable music equipment including its acoustic instruments where there is no energy consumption and hold a longer lifespan. In producing these instruments, Yamaha’s efforts are strengthened and established, as the instruments are made more functional and reusable, and reduce emissions from wood materials. Similar efforts are presented in electronic musical instruments where necessary strategies are implemented that reduce electricity consumption and campaigning to promote necessary recycling.
